Fatal infectious diseases in Terrebonne, 1830 and 1852 - 0 replies

LorraineP Posted by LorraineP in Ancestry and family history in Terrebonne on Sat Oct 30, 2021 10:17am

My 3x great grandparents, George Busby Clarke and Marie Amable Fortin, who lived in Terrebonne, had 10 children. Two died in 1830 and four died, along with their father, in 1852. I’m wondering if there are records indicating perhaps some diseases that were rife at those time in Terrebonne.

Seeking information on Fortin family of Terrebonne - 0 replies

LorraineP Posted by LorraineP in Ancestry and family history in Terrebonne on Sat Oct 30, 2021 10:12am

In 1821, my 3x great grandfather, George Busby Clarke, married Marie Amable Fortin (born 1798 in Terrebonne). They lived there after their marriage.
I know that I have an indigenous ancestor and I’m trying to identify this person. I have read that Fortin was an indigenous as well as French surname and I wonder if there is any way to find out if she was in fact from an indigenous family - and she might be the ancestor I’m trying to find!

Jeremiah JOHNSON and Charlotte CHASE-Gagetown - 0 replies

Sarah1984 Posted by Sarah1984 in Ancestry and family history in Gagetown on Fri Oct 22, 2021 6:49pm

Seeking information on Jeremiah JOHNSON who md.Charlotte CHASE d/o Loyalist Reuben CHASE and resided in Gagetown. I am trying to find where Jeremiah came from. The book Loyalists of New Brunswick lists a Jeremiah JOHNSON who came from Connecticut but I do not know if this is the same individual;in addition he seems to be listed on UEL's website but I cannot verify the information.

There is also a Jeremiah JOHNSON also listed in records from Fairfield,CT b.1756 s/o Nathaniel JOHNSON and Sarah NICHOLS but no descendants of (my) Jeremiah carry names belonging to either of these two. Two other sons of Nathaniel and Sarah were Joseph (b.1750) and Solomon (b.1753). At least one of the sons,Joseph, fought in the Revolution for the Americans. If (my) Jeremiah was his brother,a theory came to mind that if Jeremiah was either a Loyalist himself or simply married into a Loyalist family,he was either disowned or broke away from his family which would explain why none of his descendants carried his parents' names.

Whatever the reason,Jeremiah came to New Brunswick and settled in Gagetown where he raised (at least) four children with Charlotte.

William(1794-1872);md.April 11 1825 Rebecca DICKINSON(1794-aft.1861);Rebecca was d/o Tertullus DICKINSON and Thankful Rebecca CHASE (Charlotte's sister);they settled in Canterbury,York,NB

Salome(1797-1840);md.John LONDON;settled in Richmond,Carleton,NB

Mahalah;md.Thomas PRITCHARD

Mary Psalter

UEL website also mentions a daughter Hannah, who I have found no info on.

Finley Settlement and The Old Kirk Church-Seeking Info - 0 replies

Sarah1984 Posted by Sarah1984 in Ancestry and family history in Nerepis on Fri Oct 22, 2021 6:09pm

Seeking information on a couple of old places in GB-W,mainly for curiosity's sake. I grew up in Sagwa but didn't learn about either of these places until reading (and subsequently purchasing) Suzanne Sutton's book Westfield:A History Told by Residents.

1.Backlands/Finley Settlement. According to this was a community in Ononette that was settled in the 1800s but was gradually abandoned for property closer to the river. Also possibly destroyed by the 1921 Fire.

2.The Old Kirk Church that stood on the hill in Nerepis where the intersection between GB-W and Welsford meets. There's a small cemetery in the area that contains mostly Godfr(e)y and MacDonald stones.
