Thoughts about living in Whitby, Ontario - 0 replies

rose0328 Posted by rose0328 in Property wanted to rent or buy requests in Whitby on Sun Nov 21, 2021 8:40pm

So we're looking for a home to buy, preferrably a newly constructed one and we found an upcoming housing community here, it's located in Whitby which is quite close to where we're currently renting. The properties that we saw on their site really got us interested so any insight and information about living in Whitby would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Ruthven family history - 0 replies

Kim Denstedt Posted by Kim Denstedt in Ancestry and family history in Ruthven on Fri Nov 19, 2021 4:39pm

Hi - my grandfather was Frederick Hugh Ruthven, only son of Adolphus and Elizabeth Ruthven in Windsor. Adolphus was a son of Hugh and Emily Ruthven, namesake for Ruthven, Ontario. Hugh was the first postmaster.   I have much of their history, but not a lot about my grandfather, who was apparently "disowned" by the family for marrying my grandmother Jessie Chalmers. Her family may have been known to be troubled.  They eventually moved to Toronto but I am not sure of the year. My mother was born in 1919 in Michigan. They moved back and forth over the boarder a few times and my grandfather spent a year in Florida working as a mechanic.  I have seen a Windsor Bell directory with a Fred Ruthven listing in 1944, but I was not aware that he had ever returned to Windsor. He and my grandmother raised 5 kids and lived in Niagara-on-the-Lake in later years and then she moved back to Toronto after his death. He did work as a guard at the Campbell Soup Plant in Toronto. Any information would be welcome. I am writing a history of my parents' 54 year marriage and including a look at their ancestry as part of it. My mother never knew or talked about it.  Thanks for any help you can provide... Kim Denstedt

This is a Message from the Southwest Assiniboine Chapter of the Retired Teachers' Association of Manitoba ... serving southwest Manitoba from just north of Virden to the US Border.    We will be holding the Fall Luncheon Meeting with a guest speaker on Tuesday, November 16th, 2021 at NOON at the Virden Royal Canadian Legion Club Room located on the corner of 8th Avenue South and Wellington Street West (Virden).  Membership is just $10.00 this year.  Lunch is catered and the price is $15.00.  The guest speaker has a good message that you really should hear.  We would 'WELCOME' all retired teachers in the Great Southwest.  The Southwest Assiniboine Chapter of RTAM serves you.   If you are coming then phone Kel Smith, President of SWAC, at 204-748-3321 prior to Nov. 14th in order that the caterer knows numbers.  Thank-you and remember we hope to see you.  Not that far away from Melita for retired teachers.

St-Denis ancestry - 0 replies

LorriH Posted by LorriH in Ancestry and family history in St Eugene on Tue Nov 2, 2021 7:30am

My great-grandfather, Joseph St-Denis, was a farmer in St-Eugene, had 13 children with Victorinne (nee Lefebvre I believe) and died there around 1895.

His daughter Corinne was my paternal grandmother.

Some of her 12 siblings were Hermas, Florida and Helene.

I am looking for the name of another of her sisters who became a religious nun, Sister Stanislas ... any info about her would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Lorri

My Uncle and Aunt Walter and Irene MELNYK built a store and cabins near the dam site once known as “Squaw Rapids”. Both are now deceased. Looking for anyone who may have known them from that time (1966 - 1979) who might have photos of the store or cabins.
